GROUP CHALLENGE - FOIL & PIPE CLEANERS - A CREATIVE TIME!
Students were asked yesterday to be creative. They were given a sheet of foil and 6 pipe cleaners. They were given 30 minutes to plan and create something unique. They came up with some wonderful ideas including a boat, a vase with flowers, a teapot and a floating raft. The hardest part was deciding whose idea they were going to go with and with everybody having an opinion it was particularly hard, yet .... all groups discussed, listened, compromised and used strategies such as voting to come to final decisions and respect everyone's opinions. Super impressive yet again Year 4! Voted by many students as being one of their favourite challenges yet!
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS AND COMMON RESPONSES
What was difficult? Deciding on only one or two ideas. Making sure the foil didn't tear.
What was easy? Working with the group. Planning and drawing up the ideas.
Would more pipe cleaners make it easier or harder? Easier, if we were given more time to prepare and create.
Most interesting? Everyone's ideas.
What would you do differently next time? Be more careful with the foil.

GROUP CHALLENGE - SAVING SAM!
This week's challenge was called 'Saving Sam'. Groups were given a clear plastic cup, 2 paper clips, 1 lifesaver lolly, a sour worm and a wooden drink stirrer.
Lolly - Sam
Lifesaver - Sam's lifejacket
Cup - Sam's boat
Stirrer - Sam's oar
Paperclips - tools to save Sam.
Students had to use the paper clips only to rescue Sam from his capsized boat, put his lifejacket back on and put him back in his boat with the oar sitting horizontally across the boat. A tricky task indeed but lots of fun. Groups worked beautifully together. Congratulations Tristan, Tayla and Vesna for being the first team to complete the task. Great collaboration and problem solving techniques.
Thanks Year 4, I think we'll do this one again!

GROUP CHALLENGE - CROCODILES
Today, students had to form a line in their groups. They were surrounded by masking tape - outside the tape were hungry crocodiles waiting! The groups were given a number of tasks to complete inside their tape. If you fell outside your tape you were quickly gobbled by crocodiles and therefore had to start again. The challenges were to order themselves accordingly; shortest to tallest, shortest hair to longest hair, smallest to biggest feet, names in alphabetical order. The trick was to do most of these without speaking so the students had to come up with a number of ways to communicate their ideas. It was fantastic to watch them support and guide each other. Well done Year 4! See below for some pictures.
